I've spent so many years apologizing for my behavior and for the person that I used to be, so now I no longer am apologizing for who I was.
-Demi Lovato on the making of "Sorry Not Sorry" Tell Me You Love Me is Demetria "Demigod" Lovato's sixth studio album in nine years. She's just a few albums short of mimicking Rihanna's constant release schedule, and more than just a few hits short of matching Rihanna's discography. But like Rihanna nine years deep into her career, Demi is finally taking artistic control. The end result, Tell Me You Love Me, is Demi's most coherent, personal, and strongest album to date, detailing her own life journey. The hits are soon to come. Album Overview: Tell Me You Love Me is both introspective and retrospective. Demi's personal life has been marred with some highly publicized struggles, including self-harm, drug abuse, eating disorders, anger management, daddy issues, and most recently, a breakup of her six-year long relationship with Wilmer Valderrama. Today, that's all in the past, and the album serves both as a vehicle for her self healing and as a liberation of her old toxicity. Songs like "Sorry Not Sorry" and "You Don't Do It For Me Anymore" look like breakup anthems on paper, but in reality, these songs are actually about breaking up with her old self. The album is about the people around her as much as it is about herself. After all, the album is tellingly called Tell Me You Love Me instead of, say, I Love You. "Tell me you love me" is a command, but it is both demanding and vulnerable. She's ordering her lover to love her, yet she's ultimately placing herself as the object of his love. He has the power; he could always say no. And it is in this delicate balance, between being an unapologetic "savage" one song to a desperate lover on the next, that gives Tell Me You Love Me its humanity and dimensionality. Musically, the album is a departure for Demi. Once described as a "more vocally-talented Katy Perry" (yes Katy will get dragged even here) but a "second rate Kelly Clarkson," Demi's most noteworthy trait has always been her voice. As a result, most of her discography has been filled with generic pop-rock with the occasional overwrought ballad. Tell Me You Love Me changes all that, as Demi finally embraces the R&B, gospel, and soul influences that always naturally affined her voice. She has never sounded more at home. Track Reviews: The album starts off with opener "Sorry Not Sorry," which functions as a bridge between 2015's bombastic Confident and the darker Tell Me You Love Me. It's gospel-tinged but still puts Demi's confidence front and center. You've already heard this on the radio, so I don't need to go into detail about how well Demi pulls off this song with sassy, unapologetic ease. In the context of the album, this song is a representation of the newly improved Demi rising from the ashes, having won her battle over the haters and most importantly, herself. I have always considered "Tell Me You Love Me" and "SNS" to be sister tracks - TMYLM being the yin to SNS's yang. It opens up with the same dramatic horns as "Confident" did, but this time the song is darker, less assured. She begins the song by apologizing at the end of the first few lines: "Oh no here we go again/ fighting over what I said/ I'm sorry." Demi quickly finds out that being confident in herself doesn't mean she isn't vulnerable, and that sometimes being your best self doesn't mean being the best to someone else. TMYLM is arguably the most heartbreaking song on the album (not to mention the video). Demi's desperation for love is apparent ("What's my hand without your heart to hold?"), yet she still sounds very much in control throughout the song, both vocally and emotionally. She closes the song with newfound self-assurance ("everything I need is standing right in front of me/ I know we'll be alright"), having found strength from her suffering. Ultimately, TMYLM is both a self-empowerment anthem and a torch song. She quips "you ain't nobody 'til you got somebody" with impressive gusto, but she seems to believe in that statement as much as she believes in herself. "Sexy Dirty Love" is a slick electropop jam with disco/funk influences, one of the more upbeat songs on the album. Demi is both commanding and inviting, and her playful delivery lives up to the track's title. She sings about wanting a good time; the song is pretty much just that and nothing more. "You Don't Do It For Me Anymore" is another song that alludes to Demi's troubled past with addiction. "I see the future without you ... I won't fall for your games/ You don't do it for me anymore," Demi croons before going into a cathartic belt. The song is arguably the strongest vocal showcase of the album, where Demi's technical ability is just as alluring as her emotional delivery. It also features the most poignant line on the album, as simple as it is: "stop feeling bad for yourself." (Can you relate, popheads?) "Daddy Issues" is, unsurprisingly, popheads' favorite. The infectious synths combined with its punchy chorus makes it almost impossible not to at least sing along. Lyrically, the album turns one of Demi's most troubled conflicts into a cheeky dancepop jam. She has previously tackled her relationship with her father on Unbroken's "For the Love of a Daughter," which muddled its heartbreaking lyrics with overblown vocals and an empty instrumental. She was more successful with Confident's "Father," where she expressed forgiveness while foreshadowing her gospel influences. "Father" seemed like a fitting closing chapter to the issue, but it's refreshing to see Demi take what was once a serious matter into a lighthearted tongue-in-cheek banger, showcasing both her growth and her self-awareness. "Ruin the Friendship" and Only Forever" are back to back thinly-veiled songs about long time best friend, Nick Jonas. "Ruin the Friendship" is my personal favorite on the album. The sexual tension in the song is tangible without Demi ever needing to resort to her trademark belts, and she sounds more comfortable than ever singing along with nothing more than soft horns and a simple bass. The song's jazzy, easy-going atmosphere is intoxicating, and the lyrics are all too relatable. "Only Forever" functions as a sort of interlude within the album, with its murky piano contributing to a minimalist, ambient atmosphere. You could almost drown in the mood. In contrast, Demi is more straightforward, warning her lover that "you need to make a move, cause I'll keep waiting only ... forever." The vocal layering and inflections make this sound a bit like if Lana Del Rey were to go R&B, but make no mistake, it's very much Demi in the way she combines confidence with vulnerability ("Shoud I wait up for you all day and night?/Just let me know how long"). "Lonely," featuring Lil Wayne, continues the minimalist atmosphere while bringing in hip-hop and trap influences. This song features Demi at her most desperate, singing about a lover who left her "fucking lonely." She sounds hurt and pensive in the verses before going into a raspy growl and a slightly angrier belt in the chorus. Lil Wayne's verse here is superb as well, and he compliments the minimalist trap beat with his own understated delivery and clever wordplay. This track is the one that has grown on me the most. I didn't enjoy it much on first listen, but now I find it to be the most intimate song on the album. "Cry Baby" is one of the immediate highlights on the album, quickly solidifying itself as a fan favorite. Opening with an intriguing electric guitar riff, the song wastes no time diving into action. The verses are coy and mysterious, almost like the calm before the storm. And then comes the storm of a chorus. It's explosive and perhaps even overblown in the best way, featuring a surging rush of vocals, Demi's classic belts, echoes, the electric guitar, among more. "Cry Baby" harkens back to Demi's old pop rock days, but this time it's smarter, more polished, more restrained - much like Demi herself. You know an album is a good when even the filler bumps this hard. As the least complex song on the album, "Games" was very obviously meant to be disposable. Yet with Demi tackling everything from unrequited love to daddy issues to drug abuse, "Games" ends up standing out - its lyrics simply detailing the all-too-common situation about being left on read. The rapid fire hand claps at the end of the chorus were a smart touch, and Demi out-sassied herself with the single fiercest line on the entire album:
"Careful when you play these games... you might find out the hard way/ that two can play it."
"Concentrate" is the weakest song on the album, not because it's a bad song, but because everything it strives to do, "Hitchhiker" does better. Describing the feelings of new found love, "Hitchhiker" is the perfect closer for the album. The lyrics are boilerplate and mostly anonymous, but remember, Demi is newly single after ending a six year long relationship. "Hitchhiker" isn't so much personal as it is hopeful. She doesn't know where she's going, but she has faith that she'll get there. With its easygoing vibe, laidback vocals, and stripped-down guitar, "Hitchhiker" is the aural equivalent of a light at the end of a tunnel. To listen to Tell Me You Love Me is to listen to Demi's journey, both as a person and as an artist. I remember reading about her hitting her backup dancer and going to rehab back in 2009 and thinking that she was going to be the next celebrity meltdown. I remember when she released Unbroken as her comeback album and scoffing at its mediocrity (it is still a bad album). A little under a year ago, I was still dragging Demi for having "This Is Me" be her highest charting hit. Nevertheless, a few years pass, and Demi came roaring back stronger than ever. The world threw a lot at her, and maybe Demi threw a lot at herself, but how many of us can say we came out of our own self-sabotage and self-pity with something as great as Tell Me You Love Me? She realized she was hitting rock bottom, and worked for the happiness that she wanted. Through all the drama, she took her personal struggles and molded it into her artistic and personal best. Against all odds, Demi has become one of our generation's most inspirational and admirable artists. Questions to Consider
What is your favorite song off the album? (Don't say Daddy Issues unless you're a twink)
How does Tell Me You Love Me rank among Demi's other five albums?
Where do you hope to see Demi in the future?
How well do you think Demi conveyed her themes on the album? Do you think she said what she needed to say?
I was thinking about this just now after reading some of the replies, but Demi has tackled a variety of hybrid pop genres (pop-rock, pop-EDM, dance-pop, etc. - and now, pop-R&B) throughout her career. Which genre suits her the best?
